“We met when he hired me as a chef at his first restaurant. Now we’ve been married for years. We decided to build a new restaurant together. At the beginning we put a lot of thought into what concept we wanted to build. After a weekend with lots of wine, good food and brainstorming we decided to create an American diner. And we decided it should be where we lived, in Kappelshamn on the north side of Gotland. I am very fond of comics and wanted it to be like Pop’s diner from the comic book Archie. We decided to name the diner after the local name for seagull, “Maven”. That name has since then been closely connected with us. We thought of ways to present ourselves and at the same time give people some insight into how it is to run a restaurant and work with hospitality. Given my fondness of comics, we made a comic book about ourselves. Over the years, in addition to the restaurant, we also built a few cabins on a piece of land that we own not far from the restaurant. After almost 10 years at the diner we decided it was time for a new chapter of our life. After considering a few options we came to the conclusion that we would sell the restaurant and build more cabins in order to create a real rental business. And we kept the name Maven. Funny enough we sort of switched roles in the process. At the diner I was in the kitchen and Stefan was dealing with the guests. Now, he is building cabins and I am the host taking care of our guests”.
